Prof. Jonathan Brown: "Abiding Stereotypes about the Prophet Muhammad in the Medieval and Modern West"

Jonathan Brown - Abiding Stereotypes About the Prophet Muhammad in the Medieval and Modern West from Ali Vural Ak Center for Global I on Vimeo.

Lecture by Prof. Jonathan A. C. Brown, one of the brightest young Islamic studies scholars around today and someone I am fortunate to call a friend. He's speaking here about the images of the Prophet Muhammad in history and particularly in Europe and North America (and at my alma mater to boot!)

Great lecture, masha’Allah. Muslims today have become overly fixated on the future, often at the expense of knowing their past. With orthodoxy, in the form of classical jurisprudence, steadily taking a backseat to self-made ulema, we find ourselves in a state of self-imposed victimhood which has stirred the reactionary elements among us. To reverse this trend, we must unlock the shackles of pride preventing us from taking lessons from the truly learned. Muslims have faced much greater hardships and the Prophet, upon him be peace, has had far worse slander leveled at him than those of cartoonists and right wing commentators. Knowledge of our history can help alleviate the victim complex and revive the lessons from the success of those who struggled to overcome adversity implementation of the prophetic model. Greatness comes neither at the hands of the ignorant nor the victims but from those who demonstrate impeccable character.
